The Sennheiser ME3 is widely considered the best microphone for speech recognition applications. It features superb accuracy and unrivaled noise canceling abilities. This is our favorite wired microphone, best-selling product, and the least returned item on our web site. In objective testing, we obtained an accuracy of 99.7% with the ME3 in a noise-free environment and 98.9% in an environment with loud contaminating office noise at 70-80 db.

Our version of the ME is the recently updated version - the ME3-II which has a slightly different form factor (slightly shorter boom, slightly different shape, and identical performance).

There are two key features of the ME3 that you should be aware of before purchasing:

All versions of the Sennheiser ME3 (sold here or elsewhere) are wired differently than usual headset microphones and are not electrically compatible with some computer sound cards. This microphone is completely functional, however, when used in conjunction with the Buddy 7G USB adapter. For users of speech recognition software, we highlly recommend using the ME3 with the Buddy 7G USB adpater. To assure the highest quality results, we recommend purchasing our "ME3 combo" (see "related products" below), which includes the ME3 and the Buddy 7G USB adapter.
All version of the ME3 (including the version we sell) has an unusual male plug which includes a locking ring which may prevent it from fulling inserting into your computer mic jack or external USB adapter. With every ME3-II we sell, we include our exclusive "ME3 Plug Adapter" which will convert the non-standard plug into a standard 3.5 mm (1/8 inch) TRS connector.

KEY POINT: If in doubt, and to assure the best possible results, we strongly recommend that you purchase the ME3 Combo shown in the "Related Products" listed below, rather than the microphone alone.

Comments: this is truly the best wired headset microphone for use with Dragon. Because of the incompatibility with some sound cards (both on-board and external), we recommend using the ME3 with the Buddy 7G USB adapter and you are best served by ordering our "ME3 Combo" which includes both the USB adapter and our exclusive plug adapter. Be aware that this headset does NOT include speakers and rather than mounting over the top of your head, it goes around the back of the lower head/upper neck.

An alternative to the ME3 is the SpeechWare FlexyMike Dual Ear Cardioid microphone which provides nearly identical results and which does not have the issues with the unusual plug and sound card compatibility.

Found Speech Recognition Solutions because I wanted this microphone for dictation (with iPhone), but the "missing link" (a phono plug adapter which is included here) seems impossible to locate otherwise. Bought the open box to save a little bit, and it's been great. Mic is a little more sensitive to background noise than I expected but not a deal breaker... seems very high quality and I expect it to last for years.

7/8/2014 – Do you think this will work with electronic pocket recorders such as a Phillips Pocket Memo LFH-9600?

I currently have a Sennheiser headset that I use with Dragon software. It is one where . . .

Response From Speech Recognition Solutions: Before jumping ship with your current Sennheiser headset, I would suggest your run the Audio Set-up Wizard to be sure that Dragon is looking for sound from the correct location (presumably your on-board sound card). If not immediately familiar to you, this is accessed within Dragon by navigating to Audio > Check microphone.

The Sennheiser ME3 which you show in your email, is entirely compatible with Dragon and is, in fact, our best selling and highest quality mic for use with Dragon. The only catch is that it is not compatible with a rare sound card, so we recommend using it with an external USB sound adapter and sell a bundle which includes both items. You can see this at:

Sorry for such a long delay - I was waiting for some information from Sennheiser, and by the time I got it I had forgotten what it was for. Anyway, here is the pinout for the ME3:
T= Red wire, bias & audio
R= connected to the sleeve
S= Copper shield & Yellow wire, ground

The "normal" ME3 sold elsewhere is designed specifically for use with Sennheiser's Evolution wireless system, which I believe has the XLR connector you're looking for. It's not cheap though...

12/11/2013 – With what computer sound cards is this head set compatible?

Response From Speech Recognition Solutions: The ME3 has an unusual wiring configuration on the TRS connector which frequently results in incompatibility with many built-in sound cards.

To ensure compatibility, we strongly recommend using the Andrea PureAudio USB-MA adapter which will provide excellent results.
